I was trying to find out what kind of Banana Tree I have. I bought it about 3-5 years ago at Wal-Mart. This thing is HUGE. Never fruited never produced babies. The leaves are probally 6 or 7 feet well they are bigger than me and I am 5'4". The base trunk is huge in diameter. The leaves are green but the vine in the middle of leaves is a purpish red. Everyone always ask what kind of Banana is it. I said I have no clue. Please help I would love to buy another but have no clue what kind it is.

It sounds like you have an Abyssinian, which is actually a relative of the banana family. It's real name is Ensete Ventricosum - not a musa. It won't pup or sucker supposedly until it blooms then the mother plant dies. Though I've had one here in Baltimore for 6 years now and it hasn't bloomed yet. Hope it never does 'cause I'm pretty fond of the old girl. Gets topped before I bring her in for the winter and I stick her back in the ground the following spring. Gets to about 14 feet tall each summer. Last year I bought a Red Abyssinian - Ensete Maurelii and it's doing great. Since it doesn't sucker try looking at pictures of other ensete plants and you'll find yours. If you like I can send you a picture of mine to compare.
Good luck!

Thank You so much. That was last year when I wrote that and you were correct it sure was a Ensete Ventricosum. Mine finally flowered this last year and it was a huge red flower. We had tons of bee's around the flower, and flies. Well we fianlly had it removed what a job. I was really bummed though. I really like it. Do know where I can you get another one? I did go and educate myself a little on the Abyssinian. What is the difference between a Ensete Ventricosum and a Ensete superbum? I was thinking bout getting the Ensete superbum. I just bought a Ensete maurellii and put in next to my pool. We had a Banana tree (don't know which type since one of the kids lost the name tag) by the pool and it produced multiple trees. I am talking lots of trees. It did fruit and something sticky was dripping from the fruit onto our pool (not so good), plus lots of bees. I couldn't keep up with trying to cut the new trees out so we has to take the tree out. It really was pretty but not in that location. So we planted the Ensete maurellii in its place.

Maybe someone could help me on my questions.

Thanks so much,
Dawn

I have a banana plant in our front yard and it is still one month old. I don't know what kind of banana is it. It grows so fast, leaves enlarge slowly, the tree grows tall slowly, the trunk is reddish and most of all, it got reddish paint-like strikes on either sides of the leaves. It DOES bear fruit but I got it from our province so I haven't seen the mother. I don't know if it's part of the musa family but it bears fruit. Could anyone tell me what variety it is.

Maybe some other members could help me.

Thank You All Very Much

Very difficult to know the variety of the banana plant when it is small, and still did not flowered, may be we can differentiate form the leaves but only between tall or large varieties and between small / short or dwarf verities.

But now, it's 1 and one half high and it got one sucker. The red paint markings are gone. What is it?

Wait... I don't have a picture of it now, and it died. But I saw the same plant near our home. It looks like a dwarf, its pseudostem is reddish, it is only 5+ feet tall and the bunch is almost touching the ground. It has several suckers.
