We live in the northern part of Mexico and my son has planted several banana trees. People told him that they would not produce. Hey, we are on our second bunch of bananas. They also said that banana plants steal water from other plants. Since they were wrong on the first statement I am thinking that they are wrong about this too. My question: Do banana plants steal water from other plants?

Banana plants need lots of water. They produce new plants from underground...so, if left unchecked, they will eventually takeover your yard.
I'm guessing that's what "they" mean when you heard they steal water from other plants.
Bananas don't like to compete for nutrients by the way, so don't plant anything close to it or you may shorten the life of the plant.
