Hi, you want to plant banana in the open field in IOWA, Please can you tell me about the weather, and the seasons you have, and the lowest and highest temperatures you get in the year. Plus if you want the banana just as an ornamental or to produce fruit. Thank you.

Supposibly Musa Basjoo is grown in every state in the US, as well as parts of Canada. I think you could plant some basjoo, and with proper protection it would overwinter. There is also Types of bamboo that could survive the winters there(some go to -20F: Phyllostacys bissetti, P.nuda, etc. Good luck, and go for it!

i agree with green99. i've hyad clients winter Musa Basjoo in Eastern WA, and also P. bissetti and P. nuda. maybe try on a Western exposure at first or somewhere sheltered from high winds in winter.

In you case, the banana plant will not flower, and every summer you should plant a new plant, because it will die in winter, in your case. Banana tree is tropical, and can not with stand freezing temperatures.

You can cut Musa Basjoo back each fall to about a 1 ft tall and surround it with about a foot of mulch. It should come back in the spring if the the mulch does its' job.

Mulch, could work, but if we mix it with manure, it will work better, because it will increase the temperature around the root zone.
That was, just an idea, because I am not sure how much the temperature stays at zero in that area.
