I have looked through a book called "Palms Won't Grow Here and Other Myths: Warm-Climate Plants for Cooler Areas" By David A. Francko that addresses some of the issues of growing tropicals in cooler climates such as Oklahoma and even Ohio. Perhaps you will find the names of some good cold-hardy species as well as tips as to how to create a "microclimate" that will foster the growth of palms.

There is a native species of palm in Oklahoma. Small Sabal minor can be foound growing in the wild. You should check out Don's hardy palms, he is a grower in Oklahoma that has been growing palms in his garden for many years. He has hoards of very well established Sabal species on his property. Good Luck, Banana Joe

Glenna, definitely get the book "palms dont grow here and other myths". I got mine off ebay, it was like $21. There are lots of palms in and around tulsa that have survived for years. Like others have said, the author did most of his studies and research in ohio, which is much colder than oklahoma. Im in Wichita KS, and plan on putting 6 trachycarpus fortunei in my front yard here in the next 2 weeks or so. we'll see how they do. Ill definitely be on here reporting my progress.
