I have a hole in my back yard can I fill it with wood chips from a tree I'm cutting down then fill it with dirt...

What do you plan on doing with it later? If you do that in a heavy soil, you can expect water to run into the hole and collect there, possibly becoming a sink hole as the wood decomposes. If you're planning on planting something on it, be aware that wood chips aren't a good fertilizer and will actually use up a lot of soil nutrients as they begin to decompose.
