I desparately want to grow a vanilla tree/bush. Being in south Texas along the coast I should have no trouble...but I cannot find the seeds or plants anywhere, not even online.

Is there some national law that does not allow them in the U.S.?
Does anyone know how I can attain one?

I really would like to add it to my growing list of aromatic trees I have.

Aloha Andrew,
First vanilla comes from a vine ( It's an arborial orchid ). They can be trained to grow up just about any tree or large bush that allows about a fifty percent sunlight through to the main trunk. I currently have mine going up a small italian juniper in my yard. If you live REAL close to the coastline you'll have to be careful of airborne salt-spray. You'll have to give them a healthy freshwater spray to rinse them off before they get burn scabs on them. Other than that, I would recommend that you check some of your local orchid societies in your area. I got my plant from a vendor that was participating in an orchid show near to me. If you want to have your vanilla orchid actually produce the vanilla pods you'll have to do an on-line search for the technique. My first crop produced 18 vanilla beans. .... Just my two-cents, and good luck on your search ... Kaulepuaa
