ok, so clearly, I am not the greatest at cacti,......But, being the plant person on my floor, my friend brought me her suffering Hibotan. First, its red top dried out, shriveled and fell off. Next, its stem began to discolor and become,....well, squishy and liquidy inside. As I did not have care of the plant, i don't know how much water it was getting, but it is winter and i do suspect over watering,....but the top shriveling that began the whole decline still puzzles me. At any rate, any similar experiences anyone has had with these plants would be welcome, as she is very upset, as well as convinced that she can't keep anything alive.

HI,

Same thing happend to myself, but in the garden. I had added it on the same irrgation system as my other palms, cacti's etc. It does not need much water at all. I over watered it and the shrivelled. No rescueing it I'm afraid, best to start again and remember, it need very little water in the summer and next to none in the winter.
