We have lots of HUGE banana trees in our backyard and the 2 largest ones are getting a flower. We've had several trees flower and die - if we cut off the bloom will the tree survive another season?
My husband is freaking out, he loves the way everything looks and it will take years for the other trees to get this large (unless they bloom!). Any advice is appreciated. :)) Diane

Once the plant starts blooming, that's it for the main stem. Cutting the bloom off won't change things - the plant is already in reproductive mode. However, if there are new shoots growing from the base of the plant they should continue to grow, regardless of whether you let the plant finish blooming or not. My advice would be for your husband to relax and try to enjoy all the stages in the plant's life cycle, including the bloom :)

I agree with enjoying the total life cycle except ..... when the frosts turn them to brown mushy soup

I'm new to this, so I hope this isn't a daft question. For the 1st time, I've got a tree producing bananas!! The flower has kept on opening and new hands? of bananas have gradually appeares and are filling out. Now the flower is smaller and there are lots of tiny baby bananas showing, but they are just falling off, not growing at all. Should I just leave the flower alone to take it's course? Or should I now cut it off? Will cutting off or not cutting it off affect the bananas or the tree? I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks (this is a great site!)

We've had quite a few trees get tiny bananas and yes, the flowers do fall off. If you cut off the flower there will be no bananas and I imagine the tree will die faster... once the bananas mature unfortunately the tree is going to die anyway.
Right now I've got 3 trees that are 2 years old with bananas that are about 6 inches in length!! I think we might get some actual bananas this year!
