I am new to your forum and growing bananas. I may be asking an often asked question but after searching around a bit I did not find the answer so I'll ask the question. What is the proper mulch to use for banana trees? I have cedar mulch but I've heard that it can be damaging to certian trees. My trees are doing well. I acquired them from my brothers rental property and moved them to my back yard in Central Florida. I have them in sandy soil. Much to my suprise the largest one (maybe six ft.) has produced a stalk of bananas. Any help will ba appreciated.

I don't know if this is the best type of mulch, but for me it has always worked. After harvesting the banana fruit I cut down the plant with a machete and hack it into as small of pieces as possible and pile them up around the of the plant. I used to do this when I lived in Fort Lauderdale and had banana plants. They produced well for many years. Of course I added fertilzer, manure and the like as well as plenty of water. I now live in the Brazilian Amazon and only started some bananas growing a short time ago. But, I think I will do the same thing. It is not the neatest looking mulch, but it does break down in humid tropical and sub trobical climates.

i use euchalyptus mulch around my bananas here in soutwest florida, it tends to discourage insects and is neater looking the cypress; but the answer to your question is simple, anything u do to promote composting in the soil around the banana is going to help, bananas love to be fertilized and its almost impossible to over fertilize them,,, the more compost and additives to the soil the better!

Banana's are not trees but herbacious perennials so you shouldn't worry about what will hurt a tree here.<p>I use kitchen scraps, straw, leaves, bunny-worm compost (from my own worm beds) banana leaves and stalks. If it is organic, it usually gets placed around my hundreds of banana plants.

Make your words soft and sweet; you just may have to eat them someday.
