Hey Phil,
Im impressed aswell,...however I am currently reading "palms don't grow here and other myths" and they have a livistona chinensis in a zone6a. and they have pushed theirs to about the same as me,...so maybe I am thinking that my palms is onw of those in sted of the L. australis. How do you post pics. I have gotten the ppl at Ritchie feed and seed, to start looking for my plant list that I gave they a while ago, and hopefully they find them all. Hows everything with you Phil, anything new and exciting?

Hi Adam, How do you like the book? I've been meaning to get the book but never got around to it. Other than planting about 50 Trachycrapus Fortunei seeds last month which haven't sprouted yet not much. If you wan to post images try this. To post a photo, you need to size it down using photo editting software, upload it to an image host that allows you to 'hotlink' (I use, http://www.sighost.us/ and http://www.myonlineimages.com/) and then place it into your post by using the following code, However, very important, replace <> with []. <img> http://YourPhotoURL</img> Regards Edited by PhilMusa on Mar 1, 2006 at 02:48 PMEdited by PhilMusa on Mar 1, 2006 at 02:50 PMEdited by PhilMusa on Mar 1, 2006 at 02:50 PM

Hi Phil/Adam
How are things? I'm also in the process of reading that book. So far I like. I piked up another book titled "Hardy Palms and Palm -Like Plants" - Martyn Graham. It's a fast read.
I'm still waiting for my seed to Windemere seed and Joshua tree seed to germinate. My Beaked Yucca has germinated and sprouted. I have order some more seed and will give that a go. Also it will be time to start looking at ordering Plants.
I'm going to try Tropic.ca out in Vancouver. I might try a local nursery to see if they can order me some plams and stuff. Adam & Phil, I would love to see your Pics if you have any. Here is my email address giogio17@rogers.com.
Ciao for now

Good day, Thank goodness we had a warming than normal winter. Hopefully the basjoos made it through intact. I picked up some Trachycarpus Fortunei seeds in late January that have been very slow to germinate. Actually only one out of 40 has sprouted but many are shooting down a root. I plan on picking up some seedlings in the next few weeks as I'm a little impatient for these seeds to sprout. Also, I plan on picking up a larger Trachy and Needle over the next few weeks. Still not 100% sure where. I also picked up a Super Dwarf Cavendish at the Home Depot booth at the Canada Blooms show a few weeks back unfortunately this guy staying in a pot. Vanca, when do you plan on unwrapping you banana plant? Regards Phil Regards

Hi My Name is Dominik. I live in Central Europe (Poland) about 500 meters from Baltic sea. It is one of the most warm place in Poland. Since 2003 i make some test of tropical/subtropical plants. I name it "Project Platan". For those who know Polish there is link to forum where we talk about this (and wehre test results): http://oleander.pl/index.php?p=showforumsI think that there is no palm that can survive -25 or -30. It is absolutly not possible. Most of them die at temperature about -15 Celsius. There is no problem to surrvive about -10/-15 for trachycarpus (but not so long). Trachycarpus martianus (white flag at -10), chamaerops humilis (give up at -10) I`ve tested some others meditarenian like: laurus nobilis (hardy to -10, big damages at -15), ficus carica (hardy to -15), Olea europea (hardy to -12/-15, some small plants survive about -25!), erobiotrya japonica (survive -25!) eucaliptus niphophila (-25!), punica granatum (-25!), opuntia engelmanii (-25!), citrus limon (-3 no damages/-5/-7 big damages), citrus aurantium (like limon), citrus paradisi (survive -7 with light damages). Poncirus trifoliata (no problem at -25), araucaria araucana (no problem at -25) and sequoia giganteum (no problem at -25). Sorry for any mistakes. Best regards Dominik http://www.oleander.pl

Hi Guys,
Good question Phil, I’m itching to unravel my Musa Basjoo but I'm going to try and wait a few weeks. I recently purchased some more seeds from seedman.com. My new purchases includes: Chilean Wine Palm, Waggie Palm, Darjeeling Banana, Windamere Palm and more Joshua tree seeds. I'm going to start these soon. Phil it sounds like you are having great success with your seeds. I also purchased some small banana plants for $4.99 from Humber Nurseries. The Plants were labeled Musa but I’m not sure what species of Musa. One of them the stalk is red and the leaves have some red markings on them the other looks like a Basjoo but I cannot be sure. I will plant them both outside this spring. If they die, than oh well I did not spend a lot of money on them.
Adam, sounds like you and I are going to the same place to purchase some hardy palms. Are you going to Broadway Gardens in St Catherine’s? I recently spoke to Tony who is expecting a shipment in a few weeks. Who knows if it's the same place I might see you there.
Guys I cannot wait for the weather to improve a bit more. I’m itching to get this season started. I’m putting together a PowerPoint presentation of the work my Husband and I have done in the backyard las summer. When I have completed the PowerPoint presentation I will post for you guys to see.
Oleander, I think it depends where you are trying to grow these palms. There have been many success stories with growing hardy palms in our region. Thanks for the info.

I've actually just emailed Broadway Gardens as well unfortunately I will be away on business when they expect to receive their shipment. Vanca, I believe the plant you purchased is a Super Dwarf Cavendish the same as the one I bought. It is mainly green with some red blotches. Those blotches should go away as the plant gets bigger. It isn't hardy but you can still plant it in the ground and take it out before the first frost and store it dry similar to Canna Lilies. I'm very interested in seeing the pictures of your garden. Also I'm planning a trip to Florida in May and hopefully I will bring back some plants. I was told by my customs department that as long as the plants are house plants and for personal use no Phyto Certificates are needed. And they would be for personal use and who would believe that palms would be planted outdoors in Canada? Regards Phil Regards

Hi Guys,
I went down to Broadway nurseries last Thursday. Tony send me an email saying the palms shipment arrived so I took a lieu day I had owing to me and drove down. I picked up a 3gal Trachy fortunei, 1gal Trachy takil, 1gal Pindo Palm and 1 gal Sabal minor. I came home with a few extra plant one was a tree fern.
Sorry Adam, I couldn't wait. I'll be going back the following week-end April 22nd.
I would like to get a 3 gal or 5 gal Takil and another 3 gal trachy but not sure which one as yet. The weather is certainly looking up! I think I might unravel my Musa this week-end.
Phil have you unravelled yours as yet?
Adam have fun this week-end and if you have a wish list Tony may be able to get them for you.
Happy easter everyone! Vanca

Vanca, I gather from the amount of plants you bought that they are all in good shape. I hope to make it there on Saturday. I've been tied up on a business trip for the past two weeks so I couldn't go down earlier. Did they have many plants left? How were their prices? Are you going to plant them in the ground or leave them in the pots for now? I did unravel one of my smaller basjoos but it turned to mush but the corm is still in good shape. The larger bunch is still covered but if time permits this weekend it's coming off. I'll take a few pictures; hopefully there will be some green still there. Good luck on your plants Happy Easter to all Regards

Hi Phil,
Yes all of them were in good shape and they had more in the back. I find their prices are very reasonable very comparable to tropic to tropic out in Vancouver. I brought the plants out and kept on bring them in until last wednesday they stayed out overnight and I planted them on Thursday prior to Good Friday. They are looking good. The only one I have't planted is the Butia Jelly. I'm not sure if I will place it in a pot or plant it out side for the summer and bring it in for the winter.
I unravelled my Musa and the stalk was mush, which makes sense since the stalk is primarily water. Next fall, I will cut the stalk to the ground and cover the area wher the root is located. How long did it take your Musa's to sprout up last year from the time you unravelled it? The anticipation is killing me. The plant has been exposed now for 4 days. I'm thinking I sould have unravelling the Musa earlier so that it sprouts sooner.
Let me know what you think of Broadway Nurseries and how long did it take you to get there?
Ciao for now!

Hi Vanca, I went to Broadway on the weekend and was surprised on the amount of plants he had. I came back with a 3gal T.Fortunei and a 3gal needle palm. I met Tony there and he had mentioned you came down a week earlier and he had also mentioned that some guy from Ottawa drove down there. I asked if his name was Adam but he could not remember. Adam was that you? I also unraveled my Basjoo on Sunday and it did not look good for the first four or five feet but I think I was able to salvage a foot of stalk on 6 plants. I took pics and I will post as soon as I can. I uncovered my plant last year in May so it took only a week to see some growth. I would suspect that it may take a little longer because it's still April. It took me about two hours from Vaughan to get to Broadway but I did miss exit 44 so I had to turn back and go to the information centre for better directions. They are practically in Niagara-on-the-lake. It's actually bigger than I thought and was impressed with Tony's acceptance of the whole hardy tropical movement. I'm still debating if I'm going to plant my palms in the ground. It depends if I put in a deck this year. Regards Phil Regards
