Hello, I recently bought an Ice Cream and a Williams Hybrid banana plant from bananatree.com and today my boyfriend watered them with fertalizer. They are just the rhyzomes still and dont have any leaves, I just read in another thread not to fertalize them until they have at least a leaf. Will ours die now, or is this an ok mistake?

You are correct in not fertilizing the pup till it get leaves. So at this point the best you can do is stop ferlizing and water with plain tap water. Once you have leaves on these pups then you can fertilize once a month. And by the way once they have leaves you really cannot over fertilize a banana tree cause they love being fertilized. As pups it can be too much for them so it is not recomended. The pups should not die but if you are really concerned about this you can rinse the soil by watering your pups till you see water from the drain holes below the pot come out and continue adding water preferable as the plant sits in your sink to drain. By doing this you can rinse out alot of the fertilizer and clean the soil so to speak. Best of luck with the pups !!

Good tips from wayneferr, and be careful not to over water the new corm as it is really easy to rot it at this critical stage. Keep it warm!

That's good news! It didn't have enough energy(or the top of the stem dried too much) to go out the top so it took a short cut. I have had them start to rot and die on the top, so I cut them down further and it came back. Bananas are a remarkable plant! Good luck with yours!

Good Advice from green99 and I would like to add that I would get a humidistat in the room where you are growing this plant and see what the level of humidity you have in the room. You should try and maintain at least 50% humidity or better as long as you have this plant indoors. When your plant begins to show leaves it will be neccesary to have the humidity at this level or higher to aid in photosynthesis and prevent the leaves from drying out along the edges. Best of luck with your Ice Cream Plant. P.S. I have the same plant as you and my mine are growing like crazy since I planted them. One other note is to keep them warm, like at least 70 degrees otherwise the plant will go into hibernation and you will see very slow growth if any.

weve taken care of that, we went to goodwill and bought a humdifier and a heater and a temp/ hum meter and we keep the humidity at 60+ and the temp at 75+, we live in oregon so its a nice contrast to the cold rainy outdoors
