Ok I will try to explain as much as i know so someone an help me. I have 2 trees. bansjo or however they are pronounced. Im new to this whole thing. Well my 1st tree i got alomst 3 yrs ago. It grew to about 4 ft tall and had plenty of leaves on it. I never had it in the ground. Just in a pot with miracle grow and potting soil. Well last yr i got another baby tree from my dads big one. He had 4 of em grow off his big tree. Well we had it in a 5 gallon bucket and the dirt that was around the parent tree. Well it was doing good and sprouting a couple of leaves. Well i recently moved and when i did wind damage tore apart the leaves on both trees. Well i cut the broken leaves off and they were doing better. Then When it got warmer I transplanted them into the garden area outside my apartment. The ground was real moist. I kept them in the ball out of the pot and everything. Even put the soil that they were in down in the ground with them. Then I mulched it. I didnt use much mulch about 2" maybe. Well since then (about 3-4 weeks ago) my lil one has completely limped over and died. I went out today and easily pulled the rest of it out of the ground. My big one isnt growing any leaves. It is about 2-3 ft tall. It doesnt even look like it is going to be growing anything. I have come to grips that i lost my lil one but i want to save my big one. What could be causing it not to grow? I water it 3-4 times a week about a gallon each time. I also use Peters professional growing mix. 1 tblsp per gallon. BUt still isnt doing anything. I was using this method on my lil one before it passed and i dont want my big one to pass. COuld it be in the soil? Bugs eating it? I have hospice or however its pronounced growing in the same garden and they are growing too much. I just want to get some advice on what to do with my tree? Should i move it back to original pot that it was in? It seemed to do good that way. It gets full sunlight from about 1 till dark right now. Please help!!!

I'm not sure what a basjo tree is but from your description it sounds like they're getting to much water. You mentioned that the soil was real wet when you planted them, You say you mulched them, which, helps keep moisture in the ground, and you water it 3-4 times a week. Way more plants are killed by over watering than under watering. You say you easily pulled the little one out of the ground. When it came out, what did the roots look like? If they were brown and soggy than over watering is definitely the problem. If not, more info. on the state of the roots would be very helpful in figuring out what the problem is.

Its a basjoo japanese. As far as the roots, they are still in the ground. I went over and pulled on what was left of the stalk and it was only maybe 1/2" in diameter and about 6" tall but it was laying on the ground and starting to turn brown. The stalk pulled up just like spaghetti. It was really moist and gooey. I have heard from someone else last night that i am probably over fertilizing them. I use peters professional fertilizer. I was using it about 2X a week with a gallon of water. I just want my other one to survive. I have heard that maybe theroots from the stalk i pulled up might grow back. I hope so.
