Hello,
I am new to this forum. I have a banana tree that is about eight feet tall from the pot up. I always thought that it was a Cavendish Drawf but, I don't think that they get that tall. When the plant was small the leaves had stripes of wine colored on them. When the leaves got larger the color disappeared. The latest leave is 22" across x 48" long. The base of the trunk is about 7" across. It's been growing for about 16 months now. I live in north central PA and brought it in during the winter where it continued to grow. Can anyone help[ me identify this banana and when it will set a bud? Below is a photo of it.

Thanks Gene

Hello:

I also have a very similar plant that i cannot identify. But i have some photos of the flowers... So maybe someone can help.

I purchased the seeds from banana-tree.com. They were supposed to be bloodleaf banana. Well they are not. I bought 100 seeds, and have about 60 of the plants which follow.

I am not complaining because i love the plants. but would sure like to know what they are. At first i thought they were the jap fiber musa -- they are tall, yellow stalks, quick growing, drought tolerant. Reach about 12 feet tall form a tight clump with relatively narrow stalks (like 6" in diamater max).

The flower is georgeous -- has peachy bracts with yellow overtones -- see the pic. love this banana. This is the first one to flower..

pics follow...

could it be a cross between jap fibre banana and musa Balbisiana

lyrihn,

Its definitely not a japanese fibre banana - that has winged petioles, meaning where the leaf attaches to the stalk is kind of flared, or winged, if that makes any sense. I can't ID it based on the flower, since being in the cold Northeast US none of mine have flowered, and I don't know what different species' flowers look like. Yet!

Good luck -

~Joe
