I bought a plant from Home Depot that has semi-broad leaves and the "flowers" consist of these little orange pods that appear when a similarly orange sheath opens to reveal what looks to me like tiny orange bananas (the aforementioned pods). It even smells like bananas when you sniff it closely. The other giveaway is that the blooms are on individual stalks that grow up through the leaves which themselves are like single plants. The blooms last a while and then the whole stalk dies, which I then cut out making room for new ones. It's quite a bush right now being the middle of the growing season in south Florida (it's in a large pot in my backyard). I don't know the name of it and haven't been able to find out what it is online or by going back to Home Depot as they haven't had them in stock lately. I was just curious if it was a member of the banana family, which it seems obvious to me that it is. What is it's name - greek or latin if someone knows - and also, one last question - is a banana really a herb? And if so, is it still a fruit? Vegetable? Mineral?
Thanks for any replies.
