I am in the Uk and accidentally left our banana tree outside last night until about 1030pm, it was probably about -4 max by that time. He was really frosty and all his leaves have drooped. I took him inside and tried to warm him up but he doesnt look good. Is it dead? I really know nothing about plants, it was just a total fluke that he grew as we grew him from seed for fun, didnt think it would grow! So please any answers write in a way for someone who knows absolutely nothing about plants please! I think he is a musa basjoo from the pictures I have seen. He is only about 6 months old.
Thank you!

Not an expert here, but if I were you, I would leave it alone, let it die back if thats what it wants to do....back off on the water and let it go dormant. Then in spring chances are it will produce new shoots at the bottom, or in the middle of the main stem. My tree started dieing the first year after I got it. Didn't know what to do so I moved it indoors, let it all go brown and dry up, but I still watered just a little once a week, like a cup of water. This past early spring, it began shooting babies up from bottom, and I peeled the dead center stem and leaves off, and there was new growth INSIDE the dead brown foliage.....couldn't believe it.....its growing like crazy now and I need to divide it up....the pot is getting overcrowded with new shoots......jb

musa basjoo are "i believe" good to -10 *f. they are cold hardy. i can plant them in zone 6-8 in tennessee and they will come back the next year. let him die back if he is going to and in the spring you should see new growth. and jb is correct if hes gonna die back and go dormant, water but do it very little. if you water it much you will rot the crom.

It should be okay. What's going to happen is the leaves will wilt and turn brown and the stock from the top will turn a dark brown. Keep it warm. During the day set it on a window ledge where it can get warmed by the sun but take it out at night because of the cold through the glass. When/if it turns brown starting at the top, cut it about 1 inch below the brown spots where it's still green. This is because thatpart is dead and will rot and will slowly consume the plant. Keep it watered, but well drained, and the soil keep slightly damp. By the next day you should see a white stump growing out of the center of where you cut it. This is a good sign and the plant will "regenerate." After a few days it'll start growing new leaves. If you want to really ensure the new grown take it into the bathroom and place on counter. Turn the shower on hot and let the room fill with steam. Cut the top off below the brown and let the plant stay in there for about 15 min. (don't let the water hit it, you want the steam) this is to simulate the tropics and the humidity it's used to. Good luck! Oh, and don't forget the plant food. Just use food for fruit trees. Miracle Grow is the best.
