Just wonder if anyone thinks we might be alright with trying to grow this bamboo here in middle TN. We have a (wild)bamboo down by the small river we live by now growing and thought that because of the area and soil that it might survive ok.
Any thoughts ?

Randy, being no authority on the topic, there is at least one bamboo nursery in the middle of TN - http://growit.com/Bamboo/ that could be helpful to you, perhaps. Also that since TN is mostly zone 7, "Moso Bamboo ... Cold Tolerance: 0°F (-18°C) USDA Zones: 7-9" see http://growit.com/Bamboo/Gallery/pages/edulis.htm ... Plenty of folk have done well with seed-grown Moso, but personally, I have had poor luck with the species, and I am zone 8b. The seedlings have fallen prey to a host of 'little critters'. Should you grow them, best of good luck!

I've never grown bamboo but have some moso seeds that I'm going to cross my fingers over! Will be reading up on it soon also. If I can get them to sprout my plan is to keep them in pots for as long as possible. I live in south central kentucky about a half hour from the Tenn. border. I seem to be in a little pocket of zone 7.

Randy,

I live in toronto Canada and have planted three kinds of Bamboo. Rubro, Golden crookstem, and Nuda bamboo. After doing a ton of reseach on the temperature hardiness I choose these plants along with Musa basjo banana trees, ( please my spelling is horrible so some of the names might be off a little. here is a site that grows in Vancouver Canada that is zone 7 I believe. All the pictures and plants are from his yard so I imagine that would also grow in TN. My Mom used to live in Bristol and from what I know it is an occasion if it snows there. Check it out it may help.

This picture is from the guys garden behind his house as are all the others. If you cllick on the plant it will tell you about them

Looking at that I may try and plant it in Toronto with a winter protection.

good luck

I like good dirt!

oh, this is quite a neat homepage. Thanks for posting!
I have thought about planting bamboo for quite some time now, but I was always afraid that they wouldn't make it in my garden. I guess I'll try now that I know of your good experiences with those plants! :-)
