It's not for me...it's for my friend

Hey all,
I've tried to grow bananas in Seattle and had little luck. I'm now living in Phoenix and will give it another try. I am container gardening at an apartment with a balcony facing north. A couple questions I have: I've read from several places that bananas can tolerate full sun here with LOTS of water. Then another said they need shade here. Which is it? Also, when they say to fertilize a lot, how often does that mean? Thanks!

Bananas generally need full sun, they grow fine in full sun way south of the US. But -- the big but -- they can overheat above 95 degrees or so. I had a nephew live in Phoenix for a while and he sent me a lot of emails talking of temps way above that. I will hazard a guess that the reason for shade is to help cool them in the heat of the day.
