you could pot it up and bring it in the house. but you will have to supply it with light, humidity and water.
you can get some grolights for that back room if it dosent get much sun. i have 1 in my den for overwintering nanas in. just make sure that it is a full spectrum light.
i have found with my basjoos that the more cold hardy they are the more easily they burn till they get usd to the sun. i set mine out into the shade for 2 weeks and then moved them into the sun slowly and they still burned. but i put my dwarf oronicos right out in the sun and they didnt get burnt. just plant them, keep them watered( dont over water) and in a few days they will have new leaves on them that are more resistant to sunburn.
they are in an 18 in ret. pot and they are sitting on the ground( on the dirt). they will be coming into the den come winter. i keep it 70* in here with a small heater and a humidifier they will sit in the window with my nanas. thanks for the info as this is the first time ive grown a palm from seed. i was really excited when they popped their little heads out the dirt. .
once i had my seeds outside at 80*,, they finally sprouted. lol! i hope mine get that big.
you might want to use a fert that is designed for palms. in my researching of anykind of palms the salt content of the fert can hurt the palm even in small doses. contact your local co-op or favorite nursery and ask about palm food. i have 9 p. date palms i have started from seed. they will be getting composted kitchen scraps. they are only 3 inches tall and in full sun.
also make sure that when your nanas are covered up for the winter they get a very minimal amount of water. too much water in the winter will cause root rot. if your gonna bring them in for the winter(potted up) make sure they get as much light as possible and water sparingly. nanas inside the house in the winter use less water and grow very slowly.
i always throw my "green stuff" into the compost bucket. it will get reused and i would rather do that then throw it away and let it sit in a land fil.
we love it there. there is a lot going on all the time. you know you are more then welcome to hop over there and take a spin around the place. you babies look great.
i have them, well most of them uploaded in my gallery at the bananas.org. pics of the beds i dont have posted yet because i wanted to wait till i have everything planted.i do have pics in there of what the beds looked like before i started digging. this is my first year growing them and planting outside. so it should be interesting this fall when i get them all ready for winter. . if you want to go take a look at my gallery. you are more then welcome. just go over there and click the button for photo gallaer( it will be at the top of the page and then go to members gallery and click on "m" for mskitty. youll find my pics there. i havent figured out how to post pics on here yet, besides sending a link.
i wont put any nana out till the 1st week of may. we had a freak freeze the end of april last year...im not taking chances w/ my nanas. lol! i have 3 dwarf oroniocos( 2 go outside) i have 1 saba( not sure if hes going outside) i have an oronioco( dot know if hell go outside) i have 3 lavander ornatas( 2 will go out) i have 2 bronze ornatas( 1 will go out) i have 3 high color minis musas(2 will go out) i have i lil prince( he will stay potted and go out) i have one dwarf cavadish( he will go out) i have 6-7 basjoos all of these will go out. the pups off of 3 are going to kentucky. some of the nanas i have in my den i have given to a friend and they cant be transported till it warms up outside. so i have about 30 nanas give or take in my den at the present. that doesnt include 3 types of cannas i started from seed, or the ee's (3 ) kinds i have in here , my palms(3 different types) and a lot of other things that will be planted in the yard. lots of work for the 1st week of may, but it will be worth it to see them grow in middle tn.
you got a great deal! you stole those palms. wish we had dealers liike that here. nanas are looking awesome. the 1st week of may mine ego out in the yard. have already been digging holes and have organic compost and manure all ready for the day.
maybe it still will put out a pup im not sure, you can always water it a little and wait. good luck ill keep my fingers crossed for you.
if you are gonna water it, stick your finger into the dirt all the way up to your knuckle if the dirt is dry water it a little about half- one cup of measured water. if the ground is damp dont water till dry.i have one i ordered from a friend( the nanas were outside before i bought them now they are in my house) the p-stem "died" but i have a pup that sprouted almost over nite. just keep and eye on it should pup for you. put it in some sunlite if you can.
did you take it out of the dirt it was in? how did the roots look? if it was the p-stem that rotted cut it off below the rot(4 inches) and re-plant it. it should come back. if it rotted at the roots, you will need a new tree.
oh deb that sucks! . was hoping to meet you. well try next year, or when you zoom down this way. lynn i hope you can make it!!!! . i think im trying to get the flu. my youngest had it, shay had a really bad sinus infection and my throat is scratchy. and then today i helped a friend move. in the freezing cold. i told her shes lucky im her friend. lol. got a NEW pup on one of my lavander ornata. it popped through the dirt yesterday morning.now its like almost 2 and 1/2 inches tall. all i could say was wow.
looking to see all of yall there.
you can get dwarf varieties. high color mini musas, dwarf cavendish- there are many types of cavendish, dwarf brazilian, super cavandish dwarfs, dwarf oriniocs. and yes growing bananas indoors is possible. you need to maintaine 70 * or more and provide humidity for them. just remember the more a nana grows the more water it will need. you have to carefully judge the amount or you could end up rotting the roots with too much water. its almost like a balancing act.
that is so sweet of you to do that.
hiddy hello! i took the day off yesterday, cause it was rainy and yucky, and we went shopping. we bought lots of baby things. i didnt even do my algebra. . i did however buy some ee's and cannas,caladiums(2 kinds) and shay picked out some pretty orange dahilas. cant wait for spring. cincygirl the tree is beautiful, i cant wait to get it. this is one of those that are going to stay in the house in the wintertime and be spoilt. lol. ive got to get some composted manure for my new nana beds. and some potting soil to mix with what is out there. i still have to remove 2 rosebushes, one is being move and one is going to a friend of mine. this will make room for my nanas.
