It's difficult to say if it will bloom. They have a time line basically based on their growth, not length of time, which means it can take considerably longer for them to bloom if they grow slow or hardly at all.

One thing you can do is, if you have a high enough ceiling (up to say 30 feet high) you could plant it in a relatively big container with Miracle Gro soil - the really expensive big bags. Try to avoid potting soil with all the funky white crap in it. That will help it grow but what it really needs is warmth. They grow 24 hours a day when the soil temperature is 70 degrees or higher. They grow less actively when it's 60 and then below...56? I think they basically stop growing, at least, that you can tell.

There are various fertilizers you can use, 14-14-14, 13-13-13, etc, various shrub fert. You can also get actual banana fert online from various websites (stokestropicals.com is a good one). But for container plants I tend to stay away from granule fert and use liquid fert like Miracle Gro because it soaks in and gets absorbed by the plant - and you can even spray it on the fronds and the 'trunk'.

So the warmer the better. And sunlight through a window is better than no sunlight at all. And if you don't have a high ceiling, do you know someone that does? Take it over there. You can leave it outside until it gets down to 32 degrees for over 4 hours (I wouldn't leave it out at all actually below 35 but that's how long it takes water to freeze).

The bigger the container the better. I have a orinoco in a small container, maybe not even a half gallon. I potted it up (along with a elephant ear) and the banana is maybe a foot tall. I potted it up the same time I planted all my other bananas in the ground, back in April, and they are all from 6 to 10 feet tall right now (a tall one broke in Gustav). So they're like fish in that regard.

Um...this particular one is about a banana, not a palm. Not the same...

You can get palm fertiliser at Home Depot or use 13-13-13. Or Miracle Gro.

As far as fert that is not time release follow the instructions. In fact, I generally use less than it says with those. With Osmocote you can put a bunch on BUT be careful because it does not go away. In fact, it can replace the dirt around the roots and then the plant will die.

It's in a pot or container? I'd just stick with Mircale Gro fert as well as their potting soil. I fixed up a sad fishtail with their dirt. Did more than any fert could ever do.

Do some research, there is a lot of info out there on bananas.

No they don't need to be next to each other.

Yes you can dig them up. Get between them and dig straight down. At some point you will break something - several roots. Doesn't matter - as long as you have at least one root it should be fine. You will most likely need to prune off the lowest fronds due to transpiration, root shock and stress.

Give them a good blast of fert and water and you should be fine!

As far as the pups go - you could dig the entire banana plant out and see how they are growing and if they are able to be cut off and transplanted. Or just wait until they are bigger.

How old they are has nothing to do with it. It's the maturity of the plant. Growing zones differ, so that means the bloom cycles differ as well because the growing cycle is different.

I'm guessing everything came out alright since nothing has been posted for quite some time.

It's very very difficult to tell if you have.

Some friends of mine in New Orleans recently got fed up with their orinocos and cut them down. They were fully mature plants, about 20 feet tall, and of course they just start growing immediately upon being cut. I said something funny about how they'll try to fruit.

One of them did. It's about a 2 foot high stump with the bloom stalk sticking out of it. Pretty funny.

Ginger Growing Tips- How to grow ginger plants. » Grocery Store Ginger Jun 4, 2008 11:48 AM (Total replies: 10)

I actually started my rhizome in a container of sand, just had it half in half out and watered it about twice a week until it started to grow. Then I just planted it, high. They're doing great right now, about 4 feet high maybe. They get a good blast of sun for about 5 hours.

I've worked on the Tchefuncte River with white butterfly (Hedychium coronarium) in a couple of different bayous that were usually in up to at most 3 feet of water. From what I've learned they are the only aquatic ginger species.

Tropical plants help! questions and answers. » Dog proof? Jun 4, 2008 11:42 AM (Total replies: 1)

I've never heard of anything to dog proof a plant as far as spraying it goes.

I guess the best thing to do is to put it up high somewhere. Or outside surrounded by other things that he can't get through or around. I would think after a while he'd forget about it.

Or smack him.

Yeah, plant it. If the fronds totally turn brown cut them off. Just water it. It'll be fine.

Palm tree growing tips- How to grow plam trees. » Palms for Zone 5 Jun 4, 2008 11:37 AM (Total replies: 58)

Last winter I cut the leaves off of a Rojo and covered it up with sheets. It got zapped but has 3 new fronds coming back from where I pruned it.

I also covered up a small Bordelon with a garbage can. That one is doing great. My Musella is looking good now.

Does spraying it make a difference? I've never worried about spraying them with anything here in Louisiana. Is it because of the zone you're in? That sounds like a lot of work instead of just popping it out of the ground and into a container.

Banana Growing tips- How to grow banana. » Minature Banana Palm Jun 4, 2008 11:32 AM (Total replies: 3)

Eh, what? I've planted bananas - orinoco pups - in containers with - separately - potting soil, top soil, sand, live oak leaves and garden soil and always had the same results - they grew. In the ground the same of those only as well as in limestone in a driveway.

Maybe it's where I live.

So, how is everyone? On this thread I mean - did your plants survive another winter? Are the potted plants doing good?

Oh, just to be clear, I never worry about the mother plant. Either it gets a little gashed or not. No fungicide, just dirt and some water. Those things are much tougher than you realise. The pups - I've never worried about their condition, whether they have any kind of a root or not, they'll usually grow.

Thoes pups - get in there with a shovel or whatever and rip them out! Then pot them and water them once a week and then ignore them. I had 16 pups I popped last year that I just gave away. I'm always throwing those things away.

The warmer the better. 70 degrees or higher at night will give you the best growth (I know that's probably not something that happens often there but they will grow at a decent rate in the high 50s low 60s). If you can find a southern facing brick wall it might hold more heat...

Gatherings and Meetings » Using Native non-invasive plants in the garden May 21, 2008 09:04 AM (Total replies: 2)

There is a friend of mine who insists on "letting" plants "get evasive". People have corrected him time after time telling him it's INvasive but he continues to say Evasive. Is this a common thing or does he really mean it in the way of letting the plants spread out? I've just never heard such a stupid thing in my life - I want my plants to flee! An invasive plant spreads out and...gets in to everything else.
