Hello Lake Charles
This is Colfax La. Do the leaves of you banana tree arch or do they bend down at the crown? How old is the tree?

Hello
Banana seeds are easy to start if you have fresh seeds. I find that starting them outside in 4" pots under shade cloth when the temp. is around 80 to 85 F. works well. NEVER NEVER let them get dry or they will die. Don't be in a rush give them time.

Good Morning
My understanding is that the Pitcher Pllants do not like the very small amounts of minerals in tap water. I live on a lake and the lake water kills them if I water with it.

Good Morning
When I lived in western Washington State U. S. round about the first frost in Sept. or Oct I pulled down the leaves around the trunk of the Bananas and wraped the whole thing down to the ground with a couple layers of canvas and they were good for 6 mo.

After several years of starting palms from seed. I find that Liquid houseplant food once a mo. untill you set them out works great. L S U Dept. of Ag. tell me that it is important NOT to feed them when planting them outside the first year. Starting year two I find that they do great on furit tree spikes given in the fist spring. With small trees I break the spikes up and put parts of the spike in the ground the tree about 1/4 spike per 1 ft. tree.
I have some Phoenix canariensis three old that are over 8 ft. tall with this treatment.

sorry to hear about the Nepenthes. I have found that if they are misted several time a day and watered only with distilled water they are easy and healthy. Feed once a month with 1/2 strenth Orchid food they will grow like weeds. Keep out of the hot sun .
Check out BugGuide.net. You will want o collect a few first.
I find that if I feed my Banana trees with fruit tree spikes every spring they have fruit. I have 15 ft. 3 year old that has a 1 1/2 ft flower and is looking good. I also have a Musa velutina that had little 1 1/2 in. pink fruit starting the first year from seed. The spikes seem to do the trick here in central Louisiana.
Date Palms will grow outdoors if the temp. stays above 17 F. I you have cold longer than 2 weeks keep them covered with clear plastic and a light bulb hanging under the plastic. I have friend in Washington State that keeps about 50 asst. plams all winter under plastic.
Date Palms love full sun and hot summers but must have cool roots. Never put a potted plam out doors without putting pots in the ground to the top. The sun can heat the root ball to 150 F. in some areas of the U. S. A.
I grow Palms outdoors and find Date Palms the eastiest to start from seed and grow. I have three that are three years old and 8 ft. tall. After they are around one years of age I don't water but give each 3 fruit tree spikes each spring. Never had Spider Mites on Palms.
