I believe the insect that you are seeing is the box elder bug. We have them in my neighborhood in Virginia and they can get to be quite a pest, getting in the house over the winter. Here is a website with info and a picture: http://unexco.com/boxelder.html
As the website says, they are attracted to maple trees (which surround out house). They will live in the brickwork of old buildings (the church across the street).
