Move them out of the wind. If you are like me, and don't mind them not getting real big, grow them inside. They tear and split because of the wind ripping them. Actually what I do is planted two in the landscape (knowing they will get BIG, but tear the leaves), then grow three inside with beautiful, but smaller leaves.
The first thing you should do is get my address and mail me a pup or two. I am in Z5 also. Where are you at??
Why would you cut new shoots out of a sago ever? Sounds like it may be burried in the soil too much. Did you pot it, or did you buy it that way? Either way, I still question why a person would ever want to cut new shoots off of a sago.
I might suggest buying one of those 3' long by 2' wide & 2' deep tubs at Wal Mart and putting some "Yellow Groove Bamboo" in it. DO NOT plant the bamboo directly into the soil as this is a running species.
"I have them in an area now where they get full sun " My experience with Basjoo in Kansas is that the summer sun is too strong and burns them. You need to keep them in a place where they get filtered light thru other, taller, shade trees. Also, You didn't say anything about feeding them, you must feed Basjoo almost every time you water which I can tell you right now needs to be more than once every 4 days. I have mine under shade trees in my landscape, water them every other day and feed them "Peter's" food every other feeding and they have grown about 2' each (3 of them) and the new leaves look GREAT!!!
Depends on what you want. If you want a "trunking" palm, then you must try a Trachycarpus. That would survive a NY Winter with a little work. A lot of mulch and wrap. If you want a palm, but can take a "clumping" palm, then the Needle Palm (Hystrix) would make it with little to no work at all.
Sounds good. I will be in Wichita on Tuesday, but not able to come by as I am not driving, my work buddy is. Whats your address when I do get a chance.
WOW!!! How great is that!!!! I must travel to Wichita every now and then, you MUST give me your address ao I can come by and see you. I will buy something from you, don't know what. How much are your 5 gallon Trachys??? I have the following growing from seed...50 Fortunei, 15 Washy Robusta, 50 Washy Filifera, 1 Phoenix Rec., 2 Hystrix, 1 Butia Yatay. I have many many more seeds to try to pop so wish me luck. Outside I pot planted 3 Sago (2- 2', 1- 1'), 1 Yucca Faxy (5'), 1 Yucca Rostrata (9"), 2 Fortunei (8" trunks), 1 Hystrix (8" trunk), 1 Sabal Minor (8" trunk), 1 Washy Robusta (2' trunk), 2 Musa Basjoo (3'). I found a GREAT greenhouse in Leroy Kansas this week BTW. Kansas is BOOMING with palms!!!! Lemme know on the price of your 5 gallon Fortunei's as I probably will buy one if cheap enough.
