Hi Stu, Well at the moment I have a few Ensetes on the go, one about the same as yours at 5ft, I did have it outside for a while during the few hot days we have had, but have brought it back inside. Now that we are getting to September I will keep it in and see how it goes throug the winter. The others are about 1ft and I am wondering about the low light levels, and whether they will survive the winter whether inside or out? I dont seem to be having any luck at all with Musa's, though I have been trying repeatedly and with fresh seeds. Tried the bag method, tried all sorts. Any tips? John john P

Hi, Just wondering who else is around and growing Bananas and Palms etc in England. I am based i Yorkshire, and have a few plants on the go - exciting stuff, didnt expect them to take off as they have done. Want to know about others and ther experiences withour weather etc eetc! John john P

One other thing, I mentioned that my bananas were Musa's they are infact Ensetes. I have noticed that whilst I have a really good success rates with the Ensetes, it is totally the opposite with the Musa's! I have not been able to germinate any of the Musa seeds that I have, tho I have given them the same treatment as the Ensetes's - which from previous posts are doing well. Any tips for Musa seeds? Arachnid, I have them now in 10 gallon pots, they are massive! I really didnt believe that I would have them so large in both my living room and dining room! I think I have become obsessed! All are about 5ft tall with 5 leaves a 1ft long, I still give them heat, but I am thinking about removing the heat, so they wont grow as fast. My real problem now is that I am in the North of England, middle of July, so autumn and winter are fast approaching. I dont have a greenhouse, and with two at 5ft and another 3 at a foot high, I believe soon i will be living in the garden. As and when they do get too large for the house, will I be able to cut them back/down and allow them to regrow ( will they regrow?) Jldeitch I am new to bananas like yourself, none of mine have a second plant growing, and to be honest, I would want to leave it, and see what happens to it, checking to make sure it is not affecting the larger plant as it grows. It will be interesting to to hear what the experts do say. Keep growing - its fascinating! John john P

Well just an update on my banana's! They are doing fantastically well, all are now nearly 18 inches, I think they are growing too fast, but they do look good. Still on heat mats and drinking lots of water, however, taking advice from above I have not yet repotted them, and they still look like they have plent of room to grow. I also planted 30 Tesco bought dates about 3 months ago and I now have 12 date palms, all with one leaf, but each plant leaf is about 18 inches long, one has a second coming through. Again I am lost as to what to do, but I know I dont want to lose any of them, all are on a heat mat, but I have 4 to pot. John john P

Hi recently bought some Musa seeds from this site, and hey presto, 6 weeks later, I have 4 6" plants! Now I have them at this stage, I am a bit worried as what to do next. My idea was to transfer them to larger pots, leave them in/on the propagator without the lid, so they will still have heat, however after that I am stuck! I am in Yorkshire, Engand, so I am growing them indoors. Any hints/tips greatly appreciated. John john P |
