sorry you said that you brought them inside. Did you pot them and water them or just bring in the root ball and put it in the celler? If you did pot them was it just in normal soil? I think that mine are getting root rot. and a fungus so I went ond got funigcide.
Sorry to be a hassle, Martin

pliddy,
I think that I am going to try and leave mine in the ground this winter. I have split off three so far and tow have died. I don't know what I am doing wrong planting them in pots. Can you please tell me what you do to the transplanted ones. I waited until they are 3 feet tall, maybe I have the wrong soil mix. thanks for you help.
If possible please post today as i have to go to Brazil for a month tomorrow.

pliddy, How did it go?
I live in Toronto and planted 3 musja's this spring. They went great 7 feet high and 6 babies. Want to separate and bring some in doors but winterize the rest. How did yours survive?
I was thinking of building a green house with 6mil ploy wrap as well as the mulching thing.
thanks for your help.

Good point I'll look at the soil more carefully. Bark isn't good? What kind of tropical plants do you have in your garden as i am looking to add some more.
I presently only have bananas, rubro, Nuda, and Golden crookstem Bamboo. As well as three kinds of Giant Cana's.
Thanks for the heads up on the compost

GioGio, Phil, and the tropical Eye,
I take it that you all live in Toronto and one of you in the beaches. you may already know this but I recently went to 9 Leslie street ( the sewage treatment plant) on Sturdays between 7 and 12am and got a load of free compost. Packed it around the Bananas and the bamboo and it has taken off. Probably a combination with the warm weather but thought that you would like to know about the free compost. Here is the link to it.

Tropical Eye,
I am in toronto as well college and bathurst. recently planted Musa Basjo, golden crookstem like you I believe as well as Nuda and Rubro Bamboo. Soma Cana's as well giant, tropical and a begal. I would love to know how your golden is doing and how you wintered it if you did?
i planted all of these about a month ago and the golden is taking off, 3" a day now that the weather has hit. the Nuda is ok and the Rubro is stillin shock with a small new shoot coming out. The bananas are doing Ok and hope that they will improve with the heat.
I would love to see pictures of your plants that are growing in your garden. Looking to fill mine with Tropical looking stuff.
I can give you my e-mail to send the pictures if you are OK with that.
Thanks, Martin

Randy,
I live in toronto Canada and have planted three kinds of Bamboo. Rubro, Golden crookstem, and Nuda bamboo. After doing a ton of reseach on the temperature hardiness I choose these plants along with Musa basjo banana trees, ( please my spelling is horrible so some of the names might be off a little. here is a site that grows in Vancouver Canada that is zone 7 I believe. All the pictures and plants are from his yard so I imagine that would also grow in TN. My Mom used to live in Bristol and from what I know it is an occasion if it snows there. Check it out it may help.

This picture is from the guys garden behind his house as are all the others. If you cllick on the plant it will tell you about them
Looking at that I may try and plant it in Toronto with a winter protection.
good luck

Phil, Thanks for the websites, they are great. Those are huge Bananas growing well and definitely recognize the red brick from the developments around T.O.
I am curious, you posted to another that you can't over water and feed them. Does that mean not to over water them or that it is impossible to do so if they are planted in the ground? All three of my bananas now have new leaves coming out. I think that I was under watering them as I thought that they weren't supposed to get too wet. But then I started watering them and they grew more. I was wondering if I just wasn't patient enough as they have started to stagnate a little, could also be the cold weather lately.
How much water do you give them?
Thanks

Hi guys,
New to this forum and to growing in general. I too live in Toronto ( College and Bathurst) and have bought some Musa and Bamboo's. I brought them back from Vancouver from a guy that has a home business in his back yard www.tropic.ca . Ray, the guy is awesome and knows tons, not that great with E-mail but answers the phone well (old school). Great prices and ships without having to cross the border. I got Musa, Nuda bamboo, rubro bamboo and one other that I forgot the name of. highly recommend him.
Would love to get any tips from you experienced Toronto exotic plant growers!
