I believe the insect that you are seeing is the box elder bug. We have them in my neighborhood in Virginia and they can get to be quite a pest, getting in the house over the winter. Here is a website with info and a picture: http://unexco.com/boxelder.html As the website says, they are attracted to maple trees (which surround out house). They will live in the brickwork of old buildings (the church across the street). Hope this helps you.
