HI Kate march 2004 a friend gave me a 6 inch piece of olhami rizome I planted it in a pot , it took off fast , it has 3 canes that are at least 8 foot tall , and startng to grow again , if you can get a piece it should be enough to grow it , but if you can't the home depot 's in your area carry 3 types of bamboo , golden godess , Alfonse Carr , and olhami , for under 20 dollars for the 5 gallon plant (they grow fast), so check this out . On a diferent subject , I also got some dendrocalamus Brandissi (on ebay) last year about 2 inches hi ( micropropagated ) for about 5 dollars each with shipping (my wife laughed at the size of the plant , it was no more than a litle piece of grass) it is now more than 6 ft tall and also starting to grow new shoots , so it is an alternative to paying hi prices since it will only take a coupple of years to catch up . Hi Andrew Try vanilla orchid on ebay , there are several for sale . Abraham
Hi mango seeds are one of my favorite to sprout , here is the way I do it : 1- After eating the fruit, wash the left over fruit from the pit off with water, and let it dry in a shady dry spot (24 hs or so). 2- Very carefully cut the fibrous edge of the mango seed until you can se the separation of the two sides of the cover is careful not to cut too deep and damage the seed inside. 3 –Separate the outer cover and remove the bean shape seed from the inside, this is covered with a paper like package, remove it also, the seed should be white and in sections that are no symmetrical. 4- Put the seed in moist potting soil in a zip lock bag (soil should be very moist but not soggy) close the bag and put it in a warm place (over 75F preferred) away from the sun. 5- in about 10 days there should be roots and sprouts coming out of the seed. Plant it in a pot and gradually expose it to sun, at first the leafs look droopy and red and grow fast, this will eventually get green and stand up.
I like planting polyembrionic mangos since they can produce several plants and they are usually true to type, if you are going to wait for a mango to produce fruit it is better is you expect good fruit, and if all you can get is monoembryonic mango then you can graft a known type to it the second year. When you open the fibrous cover if the bean is gray or black it will not grow, sometimes they treat mangos with heat or refrigerate them too long and this kills the embryo, I have grown many mango trees this way it is easy. Have lost many mango trees also because of over watering; make sure to use good draining soils. And water when soil surface is dry to touch.
happy growing , Abraham
Hi to all , got a great reply from purenergy , many thanks, he had problems uploading to forum , anyway I will attach it to this reply soit can help all intrested.
Hi, Gecko... I posted a responce 3 times Sunday 6th and wasn't able to get the post to appear. So I'll try this way. First the container that I used was the type that you store stuff under your bed 3'x2'. I have over 3000 seeds. I soaked the seeds for 4-5 days, they tell you to soak for 24-hrs but I find if you add some fungicide you can soak them longer thus softening up the outer shell faster. When it's time to drain the water ( if you use fungicide and you have a septic system don't drain the water down into your system, kills the good bacteria ) I dont wash the seeds but put the seeds in the container with a mixture of peatmoss 70% to play sand 30% . Mixing till almost a mudmix. ( peat moss sometimes has a water repellent property so mix in water slowly). I keep the soil temp. at 85-90 deg. if the mixture is to wet leave the top open till dries out a little but soil should make a ball if you squeeze with your hand. I started my seeds on the 29 th of january 05 and was told that a 1-2 mo. waiting period would be needed. The first seed germinated on the 10th of feb. (so much for my timing) I have about 300 + germinated so far. I use 1 qt. pots to hold them over till weather improves outside. The root system on the plants are made to hold up a large growth plant. (you'll see). I also read that wind sometimes up roots them if planted in loose soil. so maybe stake the plant if in a high wind area. Ventricosum is like a sail boat on top from what I have seed. If the message board suddenly produces 3 return messages don't be supprised like I said I responded 3 times sun and none of the post appeared on the board so Im thinking that a glitch may of accured. Happy Growing......................
Hi I am also having some yellow in the leaves of some of my plants , but this is normal in our area (so. California north Baja) because of the cold night temperatures of winter , in another month they will green up as they become active again , they should not be fertilized when dormant , and they will snap out of it trust me .
Hi purenergy I am just getting started in to growing bananas from seed, and ensete ventricosum is one of the ones I will start with , can you describe how you sprouted them ? , temperature , dept , type of soil , moisture , soaking, etc. anything that can be of help to some of us that are getting ready to experiment with this . Any information will be very much apreciated , thanks in advance for your time .
Hi Sidney , looked in to it and it is not practical at all , so I just placed an order with the banana tree and will try the seeds of velutina , I will send you some Mannii seed later this year hopefully and see if you can grow them there , thanks and I will be in touch , Abraham

Brand new variety developed at the FHIA (Fundación Hondureña de Investigacion Agrícola) Research Station in Honduras. Medium size plant with broad leaves and outstanding fruit production. Cold tolerant and disease resistant. May be the next grocery store variety. Developed to be commercial export banana. Very strong plant with stout base. Excellent taste. Will never disappoint. A recent product of the banana breeding program in Honduras, this cultivar has commercial potential. It has a high wind resistance, some cold tolerance, and excellent disease resistance with s strong pseudostem and base. It is an outstanding producer of delicious tasting bananas that are reminiscent of one of its parents, Musa Dwarf Prata. A rapid growing, mostly green plant producing a wonderful tasting, slightly sub-acid, refreshing fruit that gets 6-8 inches long or better. It is a very disease resistant plant. It is also very wind and cool tolerant that is easy to grow. The first new banana variety from a breeding programme to be adopted for commercial production. It has been released in Australia as "Goldfinger" where it is showing good potential for production in sub-tropical areas. FHIA has several bananas they have developed , and they just number them the name Goldfinger came from down under .
mine is bouvardia longiflora
check out this information site for a few: http://webebananas.com/
Thanks Leo , it is my first time growing bananas , but I have had succes with other tropicals like citrus, guavas of diferent kind , mango ,papaya, passion fruit ,it still gets a litle cold here inthe winter and many of the plants slow down then , but manage to survive , we share weather with San Diego,CA.
great idea to start this , best way of getting the forum populated is by using it , this will make the search engines recognize some key words and will send new people to it when doing a search , so it is up to us to do this.
Ok , here is a question , last february I got 9 diferent types of banana plants , all where micropropagated litle guys few inches tall, I have Kru, Java blue, gran nain, goldfinger , 1000 fingers , ornata macro, manni, super duarf cavendish, anyway they are doing good so far from 2 to 5 ft tall , how soon can I expect flower stalk to be produced and from what plant will it be first ?
