I just bought 2 bananas and 2 coffee plants from The Banana Tree. The day after I got it, I see part of the leaf bitten off and some dead (bottom leaves) from the coffee plans on the floor. Interesting. Come to find out, my one dog likes to eat it for some reason. I try to keep my door closed, but that does not always work. He can open doors that are closed over. Is there any thing that I can spray on it that will prevent the dog from thinking he is a cow and eating my tropical plants??? Oh he also likes to eat the leaves of the Citris Mitis tree that I have, which is outside now.
If you need detailed steps on how to dig up the plants, take the leaves off and take the soil off the roots, here is the site...http://www.bananas.org/showthread.php?t=310 It is really good. The steps are clear and there are excellent pictures with it too.
I am thinking about cutting off the leaves of my banana, washing the roots of soil and putting it in my basement for the winter becuase it looks like it is going to hit the ceiling with it's leaf it is putting out. Here is the question: Do you think it is benifical and safe to spray some fugicide on the plant before I put it down there. It can be a bit moist down there, but it does not freeze. What do you think? Also, do you think it is safe to put on Chlorothalonil (The fugicide) on it? I appreciate any replies. Thank you.
I am in New Jersey growing a Cavendish Dwarf inside my home. I have a 90 watt flood light and aimed it towards the leaf. It was like 8 inches from it. Well, as the name of the topic implies, I have a burnt banana tree now. The largest, and newest leaf has a black spot right in the center. Because it is in the center of the leaf, it colapsed the center vein and the leaf in knd of cut in half. Do you think this will kill the tree? I'm don't think so, but I'm not sure.
Also, my house only has like 6 and a half or 7 foot ceilings, and the leaf that I just burnt was something like 3 inches from the ceiling. Basicly, I am running out of height for this plant. Is there any way I could keep it from growing for a while or put it into dormancy so it does not hit the ceiling? I apprecate any repiles. Thank you!
I am in Zone 5 or 6 (New Jersey) and the daily low tempertures are getting in the low 60's and upper 50's which is a bit cool for a banana. How should I over winter this thing? It is about 2-3 feet tall and the leaves are 8 or 10 inches wide and maybe 1.5 feet long. I have tried just growing indoors, but I have yet to succeed. All of the other plants I tried growing indoors have died. I don't want to lose this plant. If you recomend letting it go dorment through the winter, please explain it to me. I apprecaite any replies.
robinrobin. Your banana tree might have a nutrient deficiencey or it might have some kind of disease. It sounds like it is disease becuase it is in spots. A fungicide should take care of disease. Don't spray inside the house if the fungicide is not labeled for inside use. I'm not very sure on what disease it might be, but if I were you, I would look further into that.
My banana tree has a purple stripe down the center vein of it. I think it is a phosphurus deficiencey, but I am not sure. Does any one know?
Is or are there any insecticides on the market that is safe to spray on a banana tree? Would Bug-B-Gon work? I found a grass hopper on the plant the other day, a Japanese bettle on it today and a catipiller too. Any recomened insecticides? Please help. There are holes all over the plant.
There is a black spot on the stem of my Cavendish Dwarf Banana. I had it since about January 1st and have been watering it when the top layer of soil is dry like the directions say and I give it a 20-20-20 water soluble firtilizer. Is there any thing I am doing wrong or should I put some kind of fungicide on it. Please help me identify this. Thanks. I would post a couple of pictures if I knew how. Please tell me how to post pictures. Thanks!
I was wondering, since I got some Citrus mitis seeds, how long after germantion will it take for the tree to start putting on fruit? Thank you for any info.
I have heard of 6 foot fruiting Dwarf Bananas in 10 inch pots. I think they like it crowed, or atleast I think that is what the person at the Banana Tree said. I'm not qutie sure.
I think that it is probally safe to eat the bananas that the plant prduces because, as spectum was saying, it is used in farming and in food crops. Offten 2,4-D is used in corn crops as an herbicide. Since corn is a grass, it won't kill it. It is used in corn that is going to be shelled or chopped for forage. The forage is used for cattle feed in beef and dairy operations. And a green99 said, 2,4-D has been around for a long time. I think back in the 1950's or 1960's it was being used. Maybe longer than that.
If there is 2,4-D in the "weed and feed" like Spectrum said, I think there might be a big effect because I know that 2,4-D is used to control broad leaf weeds and I would consider a banana a broad leaf plant. I don't mean to alarm you, but I would say that there most likey will be an effect on the banana plant.
I see your point. I live in Northern New Jersey and I have alot of deer in the area and I was wondering if they would eat the leaves off the banana plant. Do you know if they do? Thankyou.
I have had it for about a year now and it is a Cavendish Dwarf. It also has two suckers on it that are about 3 to 4 inches high.
I live in New Jersey and I think that I live in a zone 6-7 according to arborday.org so I know that I can't keep it out side year round and it would cost lots of $ to heat a small green house in the winter. I think that the humidifer that I have now is not quite cutting it and my Banana is only 10 inches high. Any more growing tips for inside. Please help. It is greatly appreciated. Thankyou!
Hi Administrator. I think that you got those facts from the Banana Tree's Web Site. Right?
