I'm a tropical plant newbie, I'm just wondering what the heck are these strange alpha number numberings on some types of banana? What are they test tube babies? Thanks
I think the chinese yellow banana is one of the most beautiful flowers of any plant I've every seen. The only thing I can think of that can compare would be the some cactus flowers I've seen in bright desert sun in Arizonia these cactus flowers where like nothing I've ever seen before they where so bright and vibriant, you couldn't capture it on film. I can't remember they name of this cactus but it has big pink florecent flowers that only come out for a short period.

Here's a few more to wet your appiete Miss Joany! These suckers will put up with some pretty nasty temps, of course you'll want to use some protection while palms are young and not so tuff yet. Brahea armata Butia capitata Chamaerops humilis Phoenix dactylifrea Rhapidophyllum hystrix Sabal minor Sabal louisiana Sabal mexicana Sabal palmetto Trachcapus fortunei Washingtonia filifera Washingtonia robusta

I have had good luck with Musa basjoo in Zone 7b. Last winter it hit 8 degrees. No problem. No mulch. However, it never stays cold so long that our soil freezes.
Does anyone know about Musa Rajapuri in terms of cold hardiness? --- Original message by Gardendaze on Nov 8, 2004 11:56 AM I once had Rajapuri in a unheated green house for 5 years, but this last winter's harsh cold killed it. Otherwise it would have came back like it always would. I am sure if you could cut rajapuri and mulch it and it would survive outside. Rajapuri are very bullet proof. My plants did have bananas here and there when I lived in Washingtion.

How would you overwinterize a palm? Wondering if anybody lives in a cold area and brings their plants in and out or mulches every year? I winterize my bananas, just wondering what I should do with my palms.
Anbody know if there is a such a thing as a cold hardy palm? Or do you know which palm(s) tolerates the cold best or -10 zones.
The last couple years I've been living in a 4 season climate so spring, summer is pretty much my tropical outdoor growing season. I had a pretty good luck growing tropicals this summer. My space was limited though to growing in only pots and containers since my "garden" is on a deck at my apartment. I found that even though I didn't have much room I did have lots and lots of sunshine since I'm above the canopy of the local trees. This intense all day long sunlight helped a lot I think with my tropical plants since there was zero shade ahhahaa. I did have to watch very closely though because of the sunlight and the limited water holding ablites of pots to make sure the plants didn't get dry.
I'm missing Tuson,Az though, very much sunshine! Hope your summer was succefull too?
Yes, this forum is very nice. I like the features so far too. I can't wait till more people start getting invloved here, it would be nice if more people would start using it.
I've been reading over some of the posts here and it occurs to me that several of the forum members are under the impression that you can grow cold hardy banana like musa basjoo etc. in freezing tempatures without doing anything special, which isn't the case. From what I've experinced you can't let the roots of the plant freeze or it will die, you can let the stalk and leaves feeze and fall off but not the roots. I've found that by mulching heavily that you can keep cold hardy alive till spring. Now if you have a really cold winter forget it, they are "cold hardy" not "freezing hardy" hahaha.
Quote: Ok , here is a question , last february I got 9 diferent types of banana plants , all where micropropagated litle guys few inches tall, I have Kru, Java blue, gran nain, goldfinger , 1000 fingers , ornata macro, manni, super duarf cavendish, anyway they are doing good so far from 2 to 5 ft tall , how soon can I expect flower stalk to be produced and from what plant will it be first ?

I'm going to just put my musa basjoo rhyzomes up for the winter since it get's to cold here to leave them out in the elements. I'm not exactly sure how you store them? I heard something like rap them in newspaper or burlap and then store in a cool dry place over the winter? Is there more to this? Like hoe much of the stalk do I cut off? should I really get as much dirt out of the roots as possible or just kind of leave is have a little bit of the dirt left behind? How cold can I store them over the winter? Just protect from freezing temps is good enough?
Thanks guys for any suggestions!
