Hi Martanzio
Thanks for the information. I know of the services that the City of Toronto offers. I have used it in the past. I did not care for it seen we found bark, platics and other products in the dirt. Know I buy my soil to add to the garden.
I also have new shoots coming up.
Ciao
Hi Michelle,
Do not give up hope yet. Im not sure when things start to bloom for you in Oregon. For us here I'm not expecting my Banana to break ground until Late May early June. I planted my Musa Basjoo Banana's not 4 years ago and so far so good. As long as you keep the ground dry, I don't think you will have a problem.
When I winterize (November) my Banana's I would first cut the stalk then I would place a sheet of Plastic large enought to cover the stalks and the ground around the stalks. Last, I add a layer of straws on top of the plastic. The plastic keeps the ground from getting wet so the the root system stays dry. The root system can rot if the ground stays wet for a long period of time.
My banana's have done so well that I went and purchased more two years ago for another part of my garden.
Hope that helps
Hi Phil,
My husband and I had Friday off and decided to take a trip down to Broadway nurseries where I introduced my husband to Tony. My Husband Dan was also impressed with Broadway. What was unusual was Tony introduces me to Mike Niagara that is on the PNWPEPS Palms NorthEast site. Mike always gives advise on the site, nice man, he invited Dan and I to his house. WoW, nice garden, you feel like you're in a jungle. He has lots of Magnolia's and Bamboo but what was most inpressive was the size of hi Japenese Maple and Holly Trees.
His Banana's ar just starting to come out he also managed to save about a foot of stalk. All of his Tracky's survived and he has an impressive cactus garden. Mike was full of information about all his plants and has invited me to come back to his place. I have a couple of days of in May (17,18,19) and might head down there again.
Dan and I purchansed a 3 gal needle palm and I picked up some reed grasses and another Musa Basjoo. After seeing Mike's place I would really like to get the Yellow Grove Bamboo. We decided to put a pond in this year and purchases a ton of Pond stuff from Broadway. Now all I have to do is wait for the whether to get nicer.
I'm still have a hard time locating someone who carries Yucca Brevilofia (Joshua Tree). I will be starting my second batch of seed soon, my first batch (5 seeds) did not take.
Adam have you been down to Broadway as yet?
Well I must run, chat soon! Vanca
Hi Phil,
Yes all of them were in good shape and they had more in the back. I find their prices are very reasonable very comparable to tropic to tropic out in Vancouver. I brought the plants out and kept on bring them in until last wednesday they stayed out overnight and I planted them on Thursday prior to Good Friday. They are looking good. The only one I have't planted is the Butia Jelly. I'm not sure if I will place it in a pot or plant it out side for the summer and bring it in for the winter.
I unravelled my Musa and the stalk was mush, which makes sense since the stalk is primarily water. Next fall, I will cut the stalk to the ground and cover the area wher the root is located. How long did it take your Musa's to sprout up last year from the time you unravelled it? The anticipation is killing me. The plant has been exposed now for 4 days. I'm thinking I sould have unravelling the Musa earlier so that it sprouts sooner.
Let me know what you think of Broadway Nurseries and how long did it take you to get there?
Ciao for now!
Hi Guys,
I went down to Broadway nurseries last Thursday. Tony send me an email saying the palms shipment arrived so I took a lieu day I had owing to me and drove down. I picked up a 3gal Trachy fortunei, 1gal Trachy takil, 1gal Pindo Palm and 1 gal Sabal minor. I came home with a few extra plant one was a tree fern.
Sorry Adam, I couldn't wait. I'll be going back the following week-end April 22nd.
I would like to get a 3 gal or 5 gal Takil and another 3 gal trachy but not sure which one as yet. The weather is certainly looking up! I think I might unravel my Musa this week-end.
Phil have you unravelled yours as yet?
Adam have fun this week-end and if you have a wish list Tony may be able to get them for you.
Happy easter everyone! Vanca
Hi Guys,
Good question Phil, I’m itching to unravel my Musa Basjoo but I'm going to try and wait a few weeks. I recently purchased some more seeds from seedman.com. My new purchases includes: Chilean Wine Palm, Waggie Palm, Darjeeling Banana, Windamere Palm and more Joshua tree seeds. I'm going to start these soon. Phil it sounds like you are having great success with your seeds. I also purchased some small banana plants for $4.99 from Humber Nurseries. The Plants were labeled Musa but I’m not sure what species of Musa. One of them the stalk is red and the leaves have some red markings on them the other looks like a Basjoo but I cannot be sure. I will plant them both outside this spring. If they die, than oh well I did not spend a lot of money on them.
Adam, sounds like you and I are going to the same place to purchase some hardy palms. Are you going to Broadway Gardens in St Catherine’s? I recently spoke to Tony who is expecting a shipment in a few weeks. Who knows if it's the same place I might see you there.
Guys I cannot wait for the weather to improve a bit more. I’m itching to get this season started. I’m putting together a PowerPoint presentation of the work my Husband and I have done in the backyard las summer. When I have completed the PowerPoint presentation I will post for you guys to see.
Oleander, I think it depends where you are trying to grow these palms. There have been many success stories with growing hardy palms in our region. Thanks for the info.
Hi Phil/Adam
How are things? I'm also in the process of reading that book. So far I like. I piked up another book titled "Hardy Palms and Palm -Like Plants" - Martyn Graham. It's a fast read.
I'm still waiting for my seed to Windemere seed and Joshua tree seed to germinate. My Beaked Yucca has germinated and sprouted. I have order some more seed and will give that a go. Also it will be time to start looking at ordering Plants.
I'm going to try Tropic.ca out in Vancouver. I might try a local nursery to see if they can order me some plams and stuff. Adam & Phil, I would love to see your Pics if you have any. Here is my email address giogio17@rogers.com.
Ciao for now

Hi Musa/Phil
I picked up some Trachycarpus takil seeds (best know as Windemere Palms) and some Yucca Brevifolia - Joshua Tree seed the other day. I'll let you know how it turns out and if you want I'll sell you a plant.
I still will order the sister palm to the Takil which is the Fortunei which I'll order from Vancouver to get around the importing documentation certificate.
Have a great winter guys.
Hi, It looks like you have a Musa Basjoo, you may also hear the term "pups" referrred to your new baby plants.
Good luck with your Musa
Giogio
Hi Phil,
Those prices came from the Tropic.ca site located in B.C. I plan on ordering them next March/April.
Hope that helps
PaulsNS
Thanks for all the info. I have done some research and have decided to add a Yucca Faxoniana (Palm Yucca - $16.00 1gal), Trachycarpus Takil (Kumaon Fan Palm - $25.00 1gal), Trachycarpus fortunei (Windmill Palm - $18.00 1 gal) and a Yucca Brevifolia (Joshua Tree). The only place I have found to carry the Joshua Tree is Ty Ty and they are pretty expensive. Where did you buy your seeds? and when would you start germinating them?
Phil,
I'm with you. I'm going to add the book to my christmas list.
This past weekend I put my musa to bed. I hope the majority of the stalk survives the winter.
Thanks
Hi PaulNS
So going back to MUSA Ottawa question. Toronto is listed as a 6A. Does that mean I should look for Plants suited for 5B. I'm 10 minutes north of Lake Ontario. We do not get as much snow or rain like the surrounding area would.
I normally look for Zone 5 plants but thought I might try some zone 6 next year? What are your thoughts?
Thanks
Thanks for the info Phil.
Hi PaulNS
Where did you buy your Joshua Tree (Yucca Brevifolia)? And how big (pot size) was it when you purchased it? You mentioned that you kept the Joshua dry, did you not mulch it?
Thanks Phil for the info........ I have a few more questions for you regarding the pups I brought indoors.
I have cut the stalk down to an inch above the dirt. I have not water them at all. I had wanted the soil to dry first (the soil composition is sandy) before watering again. Should I just dig up the Root and place it in a paper back and replant in a few months? Or Leave the root in the dry dirt and move the pots downstairs where it's cooler for the winter?
This past week-end I sprayed the stalk of my Musa with a Fungicide and I have cut four branches off and left four. I want to start wrapping the stalk this week but the weather is still warm and the plant is still growing. Not Sure when to start?
Will you change your method of winterizing your Musa from last year? I really like how TropicalEye wrapped some insulation around the trunk. I think I will do the same but first I’ll wrap some burlap around the stalk first than some Pink insulation, Burlap, than I’ll Mulch more Burlap and some kind of plastic around the whole thing.
I hope it works. I want to save a much of the stalk as possible. By the way, you had mention a while back about a certificate when ordering through the States. This is my first year with tropical plants and I have never order form the states before. I will look around Ontario first before ordering but some of the sites I have previously mentioned have some interesting plants I want to try.
Thanks GioGio
here is the Pic. of my Musa taken in September. http://giogio17.blogspot.com
Yes,
I have checked out Humber Nurseries and they are Very expensive. Where is Richie's located. I wouldn't mind checking them out for next year. Maybe I can place an order now for April.
I have found an interesting site http://tytyga.com/index.html. That I might look at for next year. Also, some of the Yucca's like the Yucca brevifolia (Joshua Tree) looks interesting but expensive. The other Palms and Yucca's appear to be reasonable.
you should check it out
Hi Guys,
I haven't burlaped mine yet but hop to do it this weekend. As Phil mentioned will you not cut the Branches off?
I do have a question for you guys... I brought in my 4 fo my pups and two of them appear to be dieing back. I'm hoping it's just in shock. Do you have any advise?
Thanks GioGio
Hi Musa Ottawa,
Have you seen any of the Palms you have listed for sale in Ontario?
Phil Thanks for the information how to post the pictures.
Not sure why I could not see your brother's pictures.
