I live in the central valley & we had several nights when the temp reached 20 to 25 degrees. I mulched around the base of the bananas and cover the area with a cloth. Now that warm weather is starting I have trimed back the dead brown leaves & outer layers & cut back the banana down to see the red interlayers. The inside center shows a redish brown. Should I keep cutting the banana down until I see green? Or how far should I cut it back? Help pl.ease. Thank you. LindaS
I have a Dwaf Cavandish banana that I planted in the ground in June of 2005. It's about 8' high and has bananas on it. How long until the banans ripen? Should I cover the Bananas to protect them from the cold. It is getting down to low 40's at night. How big will the bananas get? Also it has several pups. Do I wait until I pick the bananas and the plant goes dorment to separate the pups? Is it better to grown a Dwarf Banana in a container? Thanks. LindaS
I have planted Cannas tubers the last 2 years. They spread very rapidly. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to keep them contained? I love the look and flowers, but I don't like having to dig them up each year because they have taken overthe area. Thanks. LindaS
Yesterday I notices something different about my 8' Dwarf Cavandish banana plant. It has the flower on it so it looks like I may be getting bananas. Totally unexpected as it's only been in the ground 2 years and I was told it would produce (maybe) when it was three. I live in Manteca(Central Valley in CA) and was told I probably never get bananas due to the climate. I also have about 6 pups around it. Can I separate the pups now or should I wait? I donn't want to damage mother since she may be producing bananas. Help! Linda S
I live in the Central Valley in CA where nights have been getting down into mid 30's. I have a Dwaft Cavindish Musa that grew in the ground to a height of about 7' this year. The label that came on it said it was good to 25 degrees. Since it is in the ground, I can't bring it inside. I did spray with Cloud Cover, but it's too big to cover( I tried). Any suggestins to help protect it? The leaves are turning brown which I expected, but i really would like to have it come back in the spring and maybe produce bananas. I also have a plumeria tree which is in a container & I have brought that inside , placed in a dark room & am allowing it to go dormant per instructions in readings on the web. Any suggestions for it? Thanks. LindaS
I have several bougainvilleas along a fence in my backyard and they have done very well this summer. I have never had them before. What should I expect as we approach fall & winter. Do they go dormet? How much should I prune them back? When? Thank you.
I just moved to the Central Valley in CA and planted tropical plants around our new pool. They have grown great during the summer, but what do I need to do to protect them from fall & winter? I have a Dwart Cavendish Banana that went from about 2' to 8'. It's planted in the ground. I tried to separate the cuttings-3 of them. Looks like only one might make it. Any suggestions for protecting the main plant or to revive the cuttings? Also I have a Majesty Palm in a container that I had inside until summer, then I moved it outside. How much cold can it tolerate? Should I move it back inside? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.
