Tropical plants Wanted ! » What Kind of Banana Tree do I have Mar 10, 2006 07:43 AM (Total replies: 8)

It sounds like you have an Abyssinian, which is actually a relative of the banana family. It's real name is Ensete Ventricosum - not a musa. It won't pup or sucker supposedly until it blooms then the mother plant dies. Though I've had one here in Baltimore for 6 years now and it hasn't bloomed yet. Hope it never does 'cause I'm pretty fond of the old girl. Gets topped before I bring her in for the winter and I stick her back in the ground the following spring. Gets to about 14 feet tall each summer. Last year I bought a Red Abyssinian - Ensete Maurelii and it's doing great. Since it doesn't sucker try looking at pictures of other ensete plants and you'll find yours. If you like I can send you a picture of mine to compare.
Good luck!
