Banana Growing tips- How to grow banana. » Ensete seeds - new experience Jun 22, 2006 08:30 PM (Total replies: 0)

Hello folks,

Well, last year, I got ensete seeds from Park Seed. I stored them for a couple of months then sow them into a tray. I did not put it into ziplock bag, etc. They did not germinated for a few months. When summer is approaching (around June), I decided to move it outside. Two of 5 seeds finally sprouted around end of June. They took 3 months to germinate.

Through winter, they stopped to grow and lost most leaves due to lack of sun. I repotted them into 8-inch pots and they resumed to grow... Today, two banana plants still are growing so well. Their leaves now are getting bigger and bigger. They are around two feet long.

hello folks,

I have a question for you because I am new to banana plants for my experience since last year. How long does banana seeds can store? A year? Up to two years? etc.

I have some banana seeds but they are a few months old. If not so, I should sow them immediately?

Thanks!

Tim

Banana Growing tips- How to grow banana. » Two dwarf bananas in a pot. Jun 4, 2006 11:04 PM (Total replies: 1)

Hello folks,

Hello folks,

I tried post previous message but it did not work because something erased my message during my posting process. Here is my second attempt.

I am surprised to notice that no one answered my questions about hardiest banana that can be grown in the northern area. Yes, there are a few species like Basjoo and Skkimensis, etc.

For example about hardiest banana lists,

Basjoo - hardiness zone 5
Sikkimensis - hardiness zone 5? Perhaps 7?
Pink Velvet - hardiness zone 7.
etc...

Which species that can grow in Maryland (Washington DC metro area) weather?

Thanks!
Tim

Hello folks,

I recently ordered something from banana-tree.com and planted it into my pot a couple of weeks ago. I am using Miracle-Gro standard (all-purpose) potting mix (compost, peat, and pertitle) and added 20% pertitle to mix.

Two weeks ago, I was surprised to notice that new pup came out of the bottom of trunk like coming out of egg shell. I thought that new pups should come out of soil by base. Is that normal? I had never seen it like that before. Does anyone know why?

Thanks!
Tim

Banana Growing tips- How to grow banana. » Self-watered pots? May 29, 2006 07:21 PM (Total replies: 1)

Hello folks,

Does anyone have any experience with self-watered pots for banana trees? Pros? Cons? That is very new to me for my garden experience.

Thanks!
Tim

Hello folks,

Recently I went to the local nursey (Home Depot) and discovered that Musa Basjoo small banana plants. I searched for some information through the Internet and was able find some information. I was impressed to notice that Musa Basjoo is enough strong to overwinter in the Washington DC metro area where I live in (Gaithersburg, MD).

Does anyone know which banana varieties are enough hardy to overwinter here? I know that Basjoo is hardy to here for overwintering. Also, I learned that other few ones are hardy too. Which varities? Ice Cream? Sikkimensis? etc...

Thanks!
Tim

Hello folks,

I am new to banana plants in my life for first time. I got banana seeds a few months ago before I discovered this web site. Last late March, I sow a few seeds into the small pots with wet Hoffman seed-starting soil mix and put them into the ziplock bags for high humidity. Then, I placed them on the heat mat on my garden shelf. They did not germinate yet. How long do they take to germinate? I was concerning about that because my soil was too wet that can cause seeds to rot.

I searched other postings and learned something. Someone said that use heat mat with timer and get banana seeds to germinate successfully in a few weeks. I have heat mat but not with timer (only termostat control).

I was searching for better banana germination instructions through the Internet but not much... Does anyone has better banana germination instructions by using heat mat with timer or so? How much moisture level do they can germinate? Which good potting mix? How about Micracle-Pro standard potting mix (compost, peat, and pertitle mixes) that I have here? Etc..

Thanks!
Tim
