If you can, Post some pictures. Some people on the forums are very good at knowing the species. Or, go back to your source. If not sure, and you realy want to take it outside, see if it will survive next years winter in the ground(with protection!).
Have Fun!
All depends on the species of banana you have. If it is a Musa bajoo cold hardy banana, it will survive your winter with a little mulching and a tarp to keep the water/snow off it. If it is a hardy veriety, plant it next spring or after your last frost. For winter, cut it back to about 2-3 feet and wrap with insulation and cover. Keep researching and READ, READ, READ. Watch for spider mites if you keep it as a house plant over this winter. Have Fun
Here are my pictures taken yesterday. I an in Zone 7a in southeast PA. Below the Philadelphia Airport. It gets below zero around here, with lots of cold, rain and snow. But this banana can take it all with wintering protection!!

Up north here, I'm in zone 7a(Philadelphia), I would wait till next year at this point. Why? Because the nights are cooler and the first frost is not too far off. The plants will need more time to become hardy enough to withstand the winter. You may loose too many if you plant now. Be patient, next year is best. Hope this helps.
I live in PA Zone 7a. I have a second season Musa with one pup as large as the mother, and two smaller(2-3') pups on the sides. My question is, being that it is now almost the end of July, would it be safe to cut off one of the pups that is about 2', and transplant it? or should I wait till next season. I have until about the middle/end of October 'till the first frost. Will it still grow this year? and survive the winter with protection? How should I handle this. I would love to create another banana area. Thanks ALL!!
I live in PA zone 7a. I have a well established Musa basjoo with some pups comming up. What other cold hardy tropicals will look good around the banana to make a compact tropical garden area. Other non-tropicals will also do. Anyone in the North East have any suggestions? Any and all help will be appreciated Thanks

I grow Musa Basjoo here in Prospect park , PA. Just south of Philadelphia , PA. ZONE 7b. They will do great here with a little care. Winterize them by cutting the stalk to 2-4 feet and build a cage around them to fill with hay and mulch. Wrap some burlap around the stump first. Then cover it all with a dark colored tarp. You can also grow Palms too!!
Sabal Minor Needle palm is great in your zone and others.

Explore the WEB for lots of ideas for your zone, it's just like mine and the tropix are ours for the taking.
Most of all, have fun with it and don't make too much work for yourself.
goodluck!!
