the pics of this pup are nice - the best i can tell with the 25 different species ive had - the slight pink on the trunk and if the leaves have a slight red color on the very outline of the leaves and the texture of the leave - it looks like possibly a brazzilian tall - has to much space between the leaves to be a dwarf variety ( but it is still pretty young to tell) - no red splotches on the young leaves tell me its not in the rojo family .

so my best guess at this stage is poss tall brazzilian - if so enjoy very strong variety and eatable bananas called lady fingers(many 3-4 inches) that have a very sweet flavor but are smaller the grand nain bananas (chaheeta bananas) and tall brazillians like to put out pups in great numbers - ive gotten up to 14 pups off one of mine in 1 year but the mother was about 35 feet tall at the time. :)

bananas in the greenhouse;
make sure you have a good current of air or fans blowing on your trees cause if they dont move around the trunks get very weak and when you put them outside again the first good shot of wind will snap the trunk like a twig .

they leaves growing inside of leaves is very common with high bread banana tree growers - when you place a tree in a very fresh high nutriant ground it takes up a very high amount of nutrients - when you water your tree or get a heavy storm it tends to make the leaves swell up while they are still in the trunk - they way the tree works is it produces a leaf and relies on the next leaf to push it through the top and out so if your having the leave enlarging themselves due to good nutient intake and lots of watering this will happen .

fix,
slow down on the water when possible and spray a fine mist of water in the crown once and a while when this is happening to help dislodge when the wind moves the leaves around - when the tree adapts to the grounds nutriant level it will stop.

anytime you transplant a tree your taking a risk of loosing the main tree due to root damage which isnt always a bad thing . let me explain.
the root system on a banana tree is made up of roots that support a leaf - when moved to a different envirement or damaging roots it will sacrifice itsself by allowing the pups (or make pups to servive) to feed on the main plant to make sure of its servival. what this does is - as long as the pups stay attached to the mother bulb the pups will grow in an extreme speed and health .
dont worry about the main trunk if this is happening - 3 out of 5 times the main will not come back but will supersize your pups .

always remember that the mother bulb has already done the job of filtering the soil and taking up the best nutrients from the ground so when she sacrifices herself the pups will be like on staroids :)
if you have the parts left over from the main that broke of save them - the best firtalizer for a banana tree is its self - dice the parts up fine and make a mulch for them to feed off of - when they parts turn brown and dried up remove them.

hope this helps ya..

Tropical plants help! questions and answers. » Sago is not blooming! Aug 22, 2006 09:54 AM (Total replies: 2)

i have a sago as wel and when i take the time to remove the pups every few yrs i get a year of no leaf production because the palm is sending all its energy underground establishing new pups .
its possible yours may be workinng on something underground as well - i would worry to much about it unless it goes on for a few years .
by the way when mine does start to through out leaves it sends the regular amount of leaves out (about 12-15) then about a month later it does it again - guess it tries to make up for lost time :)

sounds to me like you might have your tree located in a low drainage area or in an area which has lime in the ground . to much lime will change the ph lvl so that the roots cant take in nutrients and when the roots cant thrive they will tend to rot or mold up . which would explain yellow leaf and rotting bulb.
try to move the tree to a different location with good drainage and plenty of sun and use miricle grow for awhile to help it adjust the soil and repair its self.
sry best i can tell ya without seeing it..
