i'm new to bananas ... BUT ... do you know that you only get one crop out of the mother banana tree and then you have to cut it down? so you'll get a crop from the pup trees which haven't yet fruited, approximately when they get 25 leaves on them.
i read on another web site that if you cut into the ground around the pup (so you get a bit of the root system) that you can transplant the pup. Home Depot told me you can just lean against the pup with your foot and break it off the mother and that works also ... i'm not sure about that. Also, for your information the mother has a daughter and a granddaughter (pups) so you may get another lot of bananas from one of the daughters.
i also have a sago which has alot of pups grow from time to time. I find when i cut them back the main sago really has a new lease of life and i get loads of new leaves. It is also growing very tall and is much healthier with the pups removed.
