That would be a matter of opinion about seeds vs plants. Seeds are much cheaper if you're just starting out on a short budget, or getting some in the mail from an acquaintance. Another thing is, you don't have to plant them right away like you do live plants. I don't know the answer to the question about how long you can store the seeds, but if they're anything like Canna seeds, they'll last a long time. Then again, plants & pups give you a better start with an already established plant. I like both ways. The thing with tissue culture is they're all the same, where seeds have the chance of producing much diversity. Although most will be the same as the mother plant, some may grow taller, where you may get one to mature earlier, at maybe half the hight. Some may grow faster & stronger than the parent plant. (as well as slower or weaker) And for us more northern banana lovers, you could possibly get one with more cold resistance also.

Tropical plants help! questions and answers. » New banana plant Oct 7, 2006 12:37 PM (Total replies: 9)

Nice looking plant. I don't think it'll out grow your window this winter. I'm not an expert by any means, but I've had the dwarf cav. for many years. My leaves are longer & more slender, also a lighter green. It looks like the leaves are to short in that picture, for being as wide as they are. How tall were the ones your friend had that produced bananas?

They'll do fine as a group as long as they get enough water & fertilizer. You'll have to separate them sooner or later though, or they'll bust the pot. The problem is, do you have a lot of room for more pots. Then on the other hand, they would make great gifts to other plant lovers.

As a side note. Did you know if they get enough water that the leaves will drip any excess water from them? If they overhang a carpet, the drops can stain it.

Been there - done that! You can take the plant in the greenhouse on an angle so the top is slightly lower than the roof. It's not going to grow any more now, other than growing the bananas, but will stay warm enough for them to mature.

Good luck.

If it's indoors, it probably does this because the air is dry. Try misting it a few times a day, and set a pan of water near it (if you have room) to increase the humidity.

It will smother the roots & eventually kill the tree.

Most eatable bananas won't have seeds. Those little tiny specks are sterile seeds . If they weren't, you'd brake your teeth eating them.
