You can plant them in pots (20 gallon size) and then plant the pots.
It'll be much easier to pull up the pot and dump out the cannas and replant than digging.
The cannas will behave by not trying to travel past the pot's edges giving you less to worry about.

I believe you are looking for Musa Basjoo. Very cold hardy. Sorry to say, I do not have one...
I got a 2' tall pup that grew good roots. Just make sure you get a decent amount of corm when severing the pup and it should grow for you.
