I'm not an expert, but have successfully maintained two banana trees in pots for three years. All I can think of is that you may have overwatered. Especially in the beginning, don't water too often, and let it dry out a bit between waterings. After it's established, you may want to use Miracle Gro, and spray the leaves with water from a spray bottle. Good luck!
