Growing Instructions & Tips: |
| Plant the white bird at 1" depth using well draining soil mix and keep warm, damp, and in bright light. Fertilize monthly. It's critical not to let the plant get too wet or over fertilize as the bird of paradise is sensitive to salt. You must be tactical when planning where to integrate nicolai into the landscape since it can grow large and fill large areas of the garden quickly. | ||

This is the "Giant" Bird of Paradise with huge leathery boat shaped leaves upright to 18'. The white bird has large flowering bracts that are reddish with white and blue petals. It is an impressive tropical specimen wheter it is grown indoors or in an exterior landscape. We also have small plants of the Bird of Paradise - see our Plant & Bulb Section). The "White Bird" is originally from South Africa. Nicolai is used commonly in outdoor landscaping in the southern US states; it can get as tall as 30 or more feet! The flowers can get as large as 10-12 inches; it can take a while before the bird flowers so be patient, it's unlikely you'll find the plant flowering indoors. Named after the Russian emperor Nicholas I the giant white bird of paradise deserves the name. The white bird can be found many times in the lobbies of hotels and offices. The leaves of the plant are banana like. The plant looks a little like a palm too. |
